Red Ribbon Week: October 24-28th

Del Cerro is celebrating Red Ribbon Week from October 24-28th.
The 23rd annual Mission Viejo Drug Walk will be held on Saturday, October 22nd. The day will begin at 8am with a rally at Mission Viejo High School. Participants are encouraged to arrive by 7:30am to register and grab
their free t-shirt and a seat. Come and join the fun! Please see the Mission Viejo City website for additional
details.
Please look for a flyer to be sent home with the following theme days:
Monday: “Team Up Against Drugs!” Kids will wear team jerseys.
Tuesday: "Sock it to Drugs!" Crazy sock day.
Wednesday: "Turn your Back on Drugs!" Backwards Day.

Thursday: “Use Your Head, Don't do Drugs!" Crazy Hair Day
Friday: “We Pledge to be, Drug Free!" Kids wear anything RED.
Also there will be a classroom poster contest and the winning classes will have a Popsicle party the following
week.

Holiday Boutique Vendors Needed

Our annual Del Cerro Elementary Holiday Boutique is around the corner taking place from November 29th to December 2nd. We have a few spots still available for more vendors. Here are the requirements:

All items must be priced under $7 (except Friday evening when we will open to the public).
Set up is between 3-5pm on November 28th and clean up is December 2nd between 8-9pm.
Each vendor is required to work 2 – 3 hour shifts during the boutique.

The table cost is $30 and 10% of total sales will be donated to the school. No sales tax will be taken.
If you are interested in becoming a vendor please e-mail Stephanie Blohm.
Please include descriptions of what you would like to sell as well as pictures. We have a limited space so please contact us ASAP as they will go quickly.

Reflections Reminder - “Diversity is…”

All artwork the Reflections Program must be turned in on Thursday, October 13 and Friday, October 14 in the MPR between 8am-8:30am. Please be sure that your artwork follows the rules as stated in the Rules Packet. If you need a copy of the rules, please contact Christy Henry.
Don't forget to properly attach the completed entry form to your art. The entry form must include a title for
your work and artist's statement. We had very successful Work Shops and look forward to seeing all the
completed entries!

Every Box Top collected is 10¢ for our school.
Proceeds from BOX TOPS could be one of the biggest sources of fundraising for our school. The proceeds from this fundraising goes directly back to your kids, so please start clipping box tops today! Last year we raised $200.00 from Box Tops for Education. This year, We have set our sights on a much higher goal. Let’s see what we can do if we all work together. At the moment, I am planning a reward system that will encourage and motivate our students to bring in box tops for our school. Stay tuned for details. It’s easy to earn cash for our school.

1. When shopping at the store look for items that have a box top. There are over 200 brands with box tops to clip, so it’s really easy to find one. (Ziploc Bags, Go-GURT, Kleenex, Hefty, Gen Mills Cereal, & More) Before recycling or throwing away your empty container clip out the box top along the dotted lines. Save them to staple or glue to a box top collection sheet to make it easier to send to school. Need collection sheets? We will send one home or you can print one out online at www.btfe.com.

Fresh & Easy Fundraising

Del Cerro is participating in the Fresh & Easy Fundraising Programs. Please see the Fresh & Easy website for additional details. Please note that flyers regarding the program were sent home.
From Sept 15-Dec 31,2011, Del Cerro will get $1 for every $20 spent. All families have to do is bring in their receipt and drop it in the box in the front office.
We also have a shop night scheduled Monday, November 14 from 4pm-8pm. Anyone who shops then will help us earn money for Del Cerro.
Don’t forget that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This is a great opportunity to get some of your food shopping done and help our school at the same time.

Message from PTA President - October 2011

Greetings Del Cerro Families!
We are barely a month into the school year, and already so much has happened! On September 1st, before school even started, an army of helpers appeared at the school to copy flyers, and stuff those 1st Day Packets that every student received. There was such a showing of support that over 600 packets were stuffed with carefully collated information within just a few short hours. On September13th, a PTA board-cateredsmorgasbord- potluck was organized for our Teachers and Staff by Lesley Jackson with the help of many of our Board Members, much to the delight of our Teachers and Staff. September 15th was our 1st General meeting of this year, and we approved our budget and renewed our commitment to continue to support Library, Science, Art and Advocacy.
The very next day, Abby Leboff and Amy Cortez organized a wonderful evening of great food and community at our Back to School Picnic. The Reflections team, under the leadership of Christy Henry, hosted some art workshops to help inspire young artists to be part of the annual Reflections contest. September 28th
was the day of our 1st Wacky Wednesday, and the student body lined up across the playground to buy their ice cream and frozen fruit bars for $1 each. Friday, September 30th will be our first Lunch with the Principal, hosted this year by Maria Alarcon. This is a special treat for students selected by their teachers to
have some special time with our Principal. The flow of membership and orders forms has slowed to a trickle, and the processing of all that information is in the works.
October will bring us the beginning of our Art Masters Program, organized by Caysi Bull. This month the artist will be Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Students will first learn about his life and style, and then will be tutored on creating a piece of the own art in his style. October will also bring us our fall gift wrap fundraiser, organized by our VP of Way’s and Means, Virginie Bevacqua. Look for your “Kids are First” envelopes to come home with your student. October also brings us Red Ribbon week – a time to focus attention on living a healthy, drugfree life. Shannon Craycraft, our Chairman of Health and Safety has planned some thoughtful and creative activities to help get this message to our kids. During Red Ribbon week, we will also be sponsoring a Food Drive in conjunction with some local scout troops.
Please take a moment and stop by to say “Hello” to our new Librarian, Linda Bergstrom, and while you are there, you can sign up to give her a hand in our wonderful library. No experience necessary!
Our next General PTA meeting will be October 20th, at 7pm, in room 19. Signs will be posted to assist in locating that room. Please join us. To echo the theme our Council has as adopted this year, “We Are Better Together”. We look forward to meeting you at Back to School Night. We will be in the MPR at the beginning of the

Dear Parents,
Back-to-school night is coming this week. It is a great time to become familiar with your child’s classroom, his/her teacher, and the exciting activities planned for the year. You will have the opportunity to look at all of the textbooks that will be used during the year, any special activities or fieldtrips that are planned, and general classroom procedures. This is a great time to ask about homework, testing schedule, and areas of emphasis to include subjects like art, music, P.E. and Social Studies. You can also discover the best ways to keep communication open between the home and the school. Parent Conferences are scheduled for November 14 – 18 so this is not a good time to expect teachers to talk with you about your child’s specific issues. It is a great time to schedule an appointment with the teacher for another moment when they can give you their full attention and not be distracted by the evenings demands.
This is also a special night for your PTA. They will be reviewing their accomplishments for last year and their goals for the 2011 – 12 school year. They will be introducing this year’s officers and committee chairpersons and welcoming you to another exciting year. They will also be inviting all of our parents to join the PTA. We are all “Better Together” our theme for this year.
Please consider joining the PTA both with your time and resources. This is the one place where every penny donated goes directly to the students with no “middle” costs. Schools are always more successful when we have parents and teachers working together to offer quality educational experiences to our students. You make the difference in the education of your children. Their success is based on your support, guidance, and involvement.
Help us make this the best year ever for your children at Del Cerro!

Ralphs Community Contribution Program begins September 1st!

If you shop at Ralphs, an easy way to contribute to Del Cerro is through the Ralphs Community Contribution Program. Every school year you must re-register your Ralphs card . Participant Registration for the New Term begins on SEPTEMBER 1, 2011. The participation # for Del Cerro is #82645.

All of your members who are currently enrolled in the Ralphs Community Contribution Program will remain active until August 31, 2011.
Participants will be required to register or re-register for the new term at Ralphs Community Contribution or by using the scanbar letter at the register starting September 1, 2011.
If you received a scanbar letter last year, it is still good and can be used this year.
Even if your participants registered as recently as June or July 2011, they will be required to register again, on or after September 1, 2011.
Your organization does NOT need to re-register, only your participants.
This notice does not apply to participants of the Food 4 Less/Foods Co Community Rewards program.

Del Cerro will miss Bill Michelle

We would like to publicly thank Mr. Bill Michelle who will be leaving us, due to his son promoting at the end of this year. Bill had the wise idea of starting a recycling program for our school and did so singlehandedly. He not only began collection of the bottles and cans all over the school, he also undertook the daunting job of taking them home, sorting them, and turning them into cash for the school. As if this wasn’t enough, Bill also signed Del Cerro up with the Walmart plastic bag recycling program and took in plastic bags for a few years until Walmart ended the program. Thank you Bill for making Del Cerro Elementary a friend to the environment and helping develop the awareness of our students to the importance of recycling!!!!

Del Cerro Carnival Wrap-Up

The weather gave us a perfect day, after drizzling on us all week! Now that the dust has finally settled, I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge some of the people who made the Carnival the success it was. First off, I’d like to thank everyone for coming. The grounds were full of families, and it was a really wonderful afternoon/evening. We had booths staffed with High School students from all over town, earning their community service hours toward their graduation. We also had help from a local Boy Scout Troop during set-up, and a Girl Scout troop in the Face Painting booth. What made this so special is that since we had so many students working booths, we did not need to rely as heavily on Del Cerro Parents, which allowed them to come to the Carnival, and play with their kids. Many thanks go out to Rebekkah Knoles for staffing our booths, and allowing us to have such a large event. I’d also like to thank Marketa Weinzimer for her work on the Silent Auction which was quite beautiful. I’d like to thank the teachers who came and spent hours in the booths, knowing what a kick the kids get out of seeing them at these types of events. I’d also like to thank all of you who loaned us shade, so our volunteers didn’t melt in the sun. Stephanie Ming put together an amazing array of prizes for the kids. But most of all, I’d like to thank Dr. Callison, for allowing us so much freedom with this event, and Lesley Jackson, who’s persistence and reminders were invaluable. It was a really great day.

This is an amazing opportunity to show your creativity, so please join the Reflections Program. You can start working on your art now, all will be due in October.

Silent Auction Update

Dear Del Cerro familiesand teachers:
I would like to thank all of you for participating in our Gift Baskets Silent Auction. We had some very valuable, unique and fun themed baskets to auction off. Your efforts brought over $1600 to the Del Cerro PTA! It was such a wonderful Friday afternoon, I watched lots and lots of kids, parents and teachers enjoying games, food and having fun.
I would also like to thank Julie Fretwell and Cindy Back for their support, suggestions and ALWAYS positive attitude. What great PTA leaders we have! Have a great summer; spend as much time as you can with your families, travel and swim and hope to see you all back in September.

Ink / Toner Recycling

Thank you to all that have participated in this year’s ink / toner cartridge recycling. Even though Staples reduced their rewards this year, we still did very well. We made $846 in Rewards money so far this year that went to paper and supplies for PTA. That is money that did not have to come out of the PTA budget and can go to other
programs in need. If you still have any that you can bring in, please do so. This program will continue next year so if you are able to still collect over the summer we would be happy to have them at the start of school.

4th to 6th Graders to Experience “Ability Awareness Day!”

On Friday, May 27, all 4th through 6th grade students will be participating in Del Cerro’s 1st Ability Awareness Day! Presented by the PTA Special Education committee, this is a great opportunity for our community to learn about the different skills and challenges that we all face, and to help the students understand that everyone just wants to be accepted and understood. The program emphasizes the abilities we all have, not what we can’t do. The focal part of the day will be the experiential “stations” set up outside. Each student will be assigned to participate in 3 or 4 of these stations where they will personally experience some physical or learning challenge and then have the opportunity to talk about each experience. Prior to the stations, we will have a brief Assembly in the morning to introduce the day to the students. Parent volunteers, along with teachers and therapists from Del Cerro, will be leading each booth and groups of students. We need at least two (2) parent volunteers from each class throughout the program, so if you’re interested in helping out, we’d love to hear from you! Just contact me Cari Cohn-Morros. We’ll need volunteers all day (8am to 3pm), so just let me know what hours you are available. In addition to volunteering, parents are also encouraged and welcome to come to participate. Most of us have never really understood what it would be like to have ADHD, fine motor impairment or dyslexia, but you’ll have the chance to experience these learning challenges and others, and better appreciate what our special needs students continually experience, and how they continually overcome their challenges. So, we welcome you to share in your child’s experience. Each student will also receive a packet that they will bring home. That packet contains the questions that will be posed during each discussion, and you may find these questions to be a helpful beginning to your ongoing conversations with your students. So, during the Memorial Day weekend, ask your student to share the packet and continue the discussion with your entire family.
Once again, if you’re interested in volunteering, please contact me as soon as possible so I can get you on the list. We will need at least two parent volunteers from each class – perhaps it will be you!If you have any questions, concerns or ideas, please contact me. Dear Parents,
Wow… Do you believe it is almost June and the end of another school year? As we move towards the end of the year, it very important to finish strong! Parents can help by staying informed about upcoming events and encouraging your children to stay focused and engaged until June 21st.
As the school year comes to a close, it’s a good time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. You might:

Ask the teacher about your child’s strengths and weaknesses. How has s/he improved? Where does s/he struggle? What activities might help her make progress for next year?
Discuss new goals. What would your child like to accomplish? What did s/he learn from this year that can make next year better?
Review your child’s successes. Look over schoolwork you saved. Point out how much s/he has learned.
Plan a celebration. Take your child out for a special meal, to a park or library, on a picnic, or fun activity. You could also celebrate with a new book or game.
Remember to do fun things, enjoy a hobby, follow recipes together, or just understand your child’s need for a break.

So combine learning and fun! I want to extend my sincere appreciation to our parents and students for making this a successful and productive year at Del Cerro. The research is very clear that good schools must have great teachers, but we also need cooperative and supportive parents who serve as educational partners and students who always do their best! Del Cerro is special because of the day-to-day collaboration between the
school and the home. We never take parent participation for granted and realize that without our parents and the PTA leadership we enjoy much of our success would not happen. It is a pleasure to be at a school that provides so much to our students. We couldn’t do it without YOU…

Well, it’s hard to believe we’re hitting the home stretch of the school year! It’s unbelievable how fast time flies!
The second annual Book Fair was a great success. Thanks to our new co-chairs, Kathy Karns and Kathy Eubanks for making this such a special event! Thank you to the many volunteers that also contributed to the Book Fair. Without volunteers, these events would not happen!
I hope everyone enjoyed our Science Family Fun Night with Mrs. Marilyn Wenzel. There were some fun experiments and crazy creatures featured this year. The students and the parents really enjoyed themselves.
Thanks to Cari Cohn-Morros for inviting the Special-Ed Chairperson from Council, Mary Damkroger, to our last PTA meeting. Mary was able to give us insight on the challenges that many people face every day that most of us take for granted. This is a great opportunity not just for the students, but for the adults as well to learn patience and get an understanding of these challenges. It was great to learn of some of the challenges and to learn of people that have had great success in life in spite of them. If you can help with the Abilities Awareness day, please contact Cari via email through the website or the front office.

The week of May 9th is Teacher Appreciation Week at Del Cerro. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize the diligence and skill of the teachers who have worked with your child during this school year. This recognition does not require money or special gifts. It is a great time to honor these public servants with a sincere “note of thanks” from you and your child. Nothing means more to teachers than the acknowledgment they receive from the students they teach and the parents they collaborate with during the school year. Our PTA will be organizing a special luncheon for our teachers on your behalf and any assistance that can be provided will be greatly appreciated. Silent Auction

It’s hard to believe that the winter is almost over. Soon we will be planning for our summer camps and family vacations! We will also have more fun events here at Del Cerro before the end of the school year. One of them is the Carnival in May. There will be games, food, music and we will also hold a silent auction as a fundraiser for our school. Each classroom will be in charge of making and donating a Silent Auction Gift basket of a certain theme.
Most of our teachers have already picked a theme and believe me, there are some pretty awesome themes - Hawaiian, Chocolate, Beach or Movie theme to name just a few…
Very soon your room parent or your child’s teacher will be sending home information on how you can help. This should be a fun project and best of all, all proceeds will go right back to our Del Cerro PTA.

Whooping Cough - Attention 6th Grade Parents

Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) has notified Saddleback Valley Unified School District that
Orange County is currently experiencing an epidemic of pertussis, commonly called “whooping cough.” Although we have not received any specific reports about epidemic levels of pertussis in our community, it is very important that families are notified of this risk and about new requirements for immunization that will go into effect for the 2011-2012 school year.
Please read this letter in its entirety as all students entering grades 7 through 12 will be required to provide documentation of having obtained a pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster prior to entering school on the first day of the 2011-12 school year (California Law-Assembly Bill 354). Due to the volume of students that this new law affects, we strongly encourage families to have their students vaccinated before the end of the current school year and present documentation to their student’s current school in order to prevent any delays in enrollment for the new school year.
As a general guideline, we are requesting the following:
1. Have your student vaccinated with a pertussis (Tdap) booster. This can be done through your private physician or at any advertised pertussis clinic. *If your student was vaccinated for pertussis after age 7, this will satisfy the new law requirement.
2. Bring proof of vaccination to your student’s current school prior to June 1, 2011 so that office staff (Office
Manager at Elementary level and Guidance Office at Intermediate and High School levels) can input information on your student’s immunization record.
3. Keep your student’s immunizationcard up-to-date and in a secure place for reference, if needed. If you have any questions about this letter, please contact Health Services at 949-588-7651.

Ability Awareness Day

Perhaps you saw the PTA announcement for volunteers for the Ability Awareness Day and you thought “hmmm, what’s that?” You can see for yourself at the March 21 PTA meeting. Mary Damkroger, the SVPTA Council Special Education Chairperson, will be our guest speaker at the 7:00pm General Meeting. Mary has presented the Ability Awareness program at her children’s SVUSD schools for several years, and has been instrumental in helping numerous other SVUSD schools present the program. Now it’s Del Cerro’s turn, and this presentation is just the start.
Mary will explain the program and provide a demonstration for all of us. The goal of the program is to understand the differences and challenges we all face. Ability Awareness Day is about inclusion, tolerance, and the opportunity to change how we view a person with a difference. The program does this through various experiential stations that allow participants to experience various special needs or physical, mental or psychological challenges.
These experiential stations will help us all understand how different challenges affect others. At Del Cerro we have students with special needs in our SDC classes as well as in all general education classes. Experiencing many of these needs in our Ability Awareness Day will not only help us all recognize how and why people are different, but it also can relieve many of the unanswered questions that our students (and parents) have. The program is a way to help integrate and educate our students.
We hope you will join us at the 7:00pm General PTA March 21 meeting for Mary Damkroger’s presentation and demonstration. We’re very fortunate to have Mary attend our meeting. Hopefully, it will also encourage you to volunteer to help us put on our own Ability Awareness Day in the near future. See you at the meeting,

Welcome to March!
We just had our annual Jog a thon and I want to say congratulations to Cari Vedder and Jack Van Camp for a job well done!! This is their first year chairing this event and they did a fantastic job! Thank you to the many, many volunteers that helped with this event. Also to all of the parents that were able to cheer on our students.
It’s great to see all those motivated faces! Coming up Friday, March 4th is our Science Family Fun Night with Mrs. Wenzel. Can’t wait to see what fascinating experiments she’ll have in store.
Next will be parent/teacher conferences along with the spring book fair. This book fair is a great opportunity for us to earn books for the library. Stop by before or after school and check it out!
Our next PTA meeting is Monday, March 21st. We will have Special Ed Chair, Mary Dambroger as our guest speaker. She is on the council level of PTA and is a former O’Neill Elementary parent. Mary will give us some great insight on our special needs students. We will also be holding our election for the 2011-2012 PTA board, so you don’t want to miss it!

Congratulations to Mrs. Barbara Hoefer, Del Cerro 2011 Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Hoefer has been in our district since September of 1985 and has been teaching at Del Cerro since 1987. Mrs. Hoefer is an outstanding educator who is very deserving of this recognition, especially when it is provided by her fellow teachers. I know that parents, students, and staff appreciate the hours and hours of commitment that Mrs. Hoefer applies to her lessons and teaching each year. She is a tireless worker and offers an educational program that stimulates and challenges her students. Mrs. Hoefer is certainly one of Del Cerro’s finest and it is a pleasure to recognize her for her skills and talents.

Parent conferences are almost here. We have conferences scheduled from March 14th to March 21st. All of these scheduled days will be Minimum Days at Del Cerro. This is the second opportunity to meet with your
child’s teacher. Conferences are available to all parents who want to discuss their child’s progress, but are not required if parents do not feel a conference is necessary. Teachers will communicate directly with parents if they are recommending a conference. Parents may confirm a conference by going to www.delcerro.org and scheduling on line. It’s hard to believe that the year is half over and there is still so much going on! Each event or activity takes time, effort and several volunteers to accomplish. I am thankful that we have such wonderful volunteers helping to make each and every task a success!

Believe it or not, it’s time to start working on your yearbook pages! If you are a room parent or volunteered to do your class’ page, the deadline to turn in completed pages is February 18th. Send it via email to Julie Fretwell or put it on a cd in pdf format marked “yearbook” and your teacher’s name. Cd’s can be turned in to your teacher or through the front office. Don’t know how to make a page? That’s ok! Just submit no more than 30-35 pictures on a cd by February 11th and the page will get done for you. Please make sure every child in the class is represented. If you have any other questions on how to do a collage page, please don’t hesitate to contact me with questions and I will help you out!

The jog-a-thon is coming! February 25th is the annual jog -a-thon. We need volunteers! A flyer has gone home already so if you are available to help that day, please fill it out and return it to school. If you don’t know what tie your child’s class will be running, email me and I will find out for you!

The next Family Fun Night is March 4th. Mrs. Marilyn Wenzel, our Hands on Science teacher will be doing some fun experiments that you don’t want to miss out on! Remember last year’s bouncing quarter on the dry ice? Let’s see what she brings this time! Want to know what’s going on? Come to the next PTA Meeting on Monday, February 7th. Dear Parents,
The benefits of the Internet are considerable; email, chat with friends, news and information, entertainment, shopping, travel info, selling surplus items, exchanging family and friends pictures, just to name a few. Along with the many benefits there are some risks. It is important to remind all users that when you are online you are in public. The Internet is a global network of networks. Rules and standards vary by community and user. It is important for parents to reduce the risks for their children. It is important to set reasonable rules and guidelines for Internet use and a good idea to discuss these rules with your children and post them near the computer as a reminder. Monitoring and limiting computer and Internet use will allow students to be active participants in the many applications of technology and parents will be confident in their child’s online safety.
SUGGESTED INTERNET RULES FOR CHILDREN:
1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents’ permission.
2. I will tell my parents right away if I come across information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
3. I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents.
4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the service provider.
6. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day
that I can be online the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit.
7. I will not give out my Internet password to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents.
8. I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software.
9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.
Technology can be a great tool for learning, but the Internet, like schools, homes and every other good place does have some risks. As parents and educators we can provide guidance and direction to maximize their success.

Jog-a-Thon

Del Cerro's Jog-A-Thonis one of the major fundraisers for the PTA and we are asking everyone toparticipate. This is a great way for all Del Cerro students to get fit, havefun and raise money for our PTA which helps pay for several school activitiesand programs.

Welcome Back! Hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your families! Break time is over and it’s back to work! We had our first Family Fun Night in December and it was a lot of fun! Thanks go to Cindy Back for organizing this event. Can’t wait for the next one! Please join us for our January PTA meeting on Monday, January 10th. Marilyn Wenzel, our Hands on Science teacher will be coming to do a demonstration and give us a little insight of the kinds of fun science things she teaches our students. The PTA funds having Mrs. Wenzel so it’s a great opportunity to come and see that we’re definitely getting our money’s worth! In February we will be having the Annual Jog a Thon. We would appreciate donations of waters for the students, so if you have connections, please contact Cari Vedder by leaving a message in the front office. Volunteers to help out on the day of the event will be appreciated as well. Last chance Yearbook orders will be coming out soon. Hopefully you have already ordered yours. If

Students will be able to do their own shopping from a variety of vendors. The merchandise will be screened for quality and value with a Maximum price of $7.00 per item. Parent volunteers are needed to assist children with shopping and free gift wrap. This service is sponsored by Del Cerro PTA. Monday, November 29th is Parent Preview from 5-7 pm. Children will shop with their class classroom and after school Tuesday, November 30th - Friday, December 3rd: 8:00am -3:00 pm. Friday, December 3rd will be a special night. The boutique will be reopening to friends and family of Del Cerro from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Vendors will bring out a greater selection of exciting items, and parents, siblings and the community will be invited to shop.

Ink Cartridge Recycling

A simple way to contribute to our school while being environmentally friendly is to bring in your old ink or toner cartridges. We have a container for them in the MPR near the door to the teacher's lounge. We take them to Staples for Staples reward money.
Last year we raised enough money to provide for all of the PTA paper supplies! Please consider if you know anybody who can get them from work as well. We are hoping to increase the number that we bring in due to Staples decreasing the amount rewarded for each cartridge. Thanks for your support!

Well it’s November already and the holidays are coming up fast! We had a great PTA meeting in October with guest speakers from our Art Masters program. Parents got a little insight on what artists are studied and how the different grade levels get to use the styles of those artists to create their own masterpieces. It was very informative and fun! At our next meeting the topic will be the Del Cerro computer lab. You won’t want to miss it! Hopefully everyone will be taking advantage of your parent/teacher conferences. We will be sending your PTA receipts to your teachers to include with your child’s school work packet. Please keep these receipts handy. It will list all of the items that you have sent in money for that is sponsored by the PTA such as membership, science lab fees, yearbooks and spirit wear. Our annual Fall Book Fair will also be going on during conference week. Stop by and take a look at what’s new and pick up a few books. This is a great way for not only our students to purchase books, but it helps earn books for our school library in addition to raising money to contribute to the many programs PTA sponsors. School Assembly Canines Companions for Independence

On October 14, students and teachers will be invited to a presentation by volunteers from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). During this special assembly, adults and students alike will learn about the amazing things that assistance dogs can do in a unique human/canine partnership. The assembly is coordinated by our PTA Special Education Liaison.

CCI is a nonprofit organization whose motto is,"Exceptional Dogs for Exceptional People." These highly trained dogs are very special. Bonnie Mueller, Susan Byrd, and Mary Hill will show you some of the tasks these dogs perform every day. It has often been said, "These dogs are not circus dogs; they do not perform tricks. They are service dogs; they perform tasks." Puppy raiser Bonnie and her 11th puppy-in-training "Tiffi" will teach about the process of raising a puppy for CCI for approximately 16 months, beginning when the puppy is just 8 weeks old. Volunteer Susan will explain her experience with CCI as well as being a veterinary nurse. CCI Graduate Mary and her Service Dog "Indy" (Indira III) will explain the process called Team Training and will demonstrate the tasks that Indy accomplishes for Mary on a daily basis.

The students will learn that CCI trains four types of assistance dogs: service dogs, hearing dogs, facility dogs, and skilled companion dogs. CCI does not train seeingeye or guide dogs for the blind. If you would like to learn more about CCI before or after the assembly, please visit www.cci.org. In case all questions aren’t answered at the assembly, students can probably find the answers on that website. The CCI volunteers will also have brochures for the teachers and a surprise treat for each student. So, don’t be surprised when your children tell you they saw dogs at school! These are exceptional dogs that help exceptional people. We know your kids will give a warm welcome to our CCI presenters and dogs on October 14 – and parents are welcome to attend too!
The K - 3 Assembly will be from 11:10am-11:30am,
grades 4 - 6 at 11:40am-12:10pm.
Both assemblies will be in the MPR.

We want you to know about the events planned by your child’s teacher and the school, to include the activities and instruction that is planned for the school year. Staying informed of the procedures and routines being established will help parents be active partners in their children’s education. Parents are the FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT teachers their children will have as they grow, learn, and mature. Del Cerro’s first PTA meeting of the year was very well attended. We had over 40 parents join us and we are hoping for more next month. Each month we will present information on a program being funded by parents and the PTA. In the next few months we will have a presentation by Art Masters, our Science Specialist, our Librarian, and a review of our Computer Lab and
it’s great software. Del Cerro is very fortunate to have parents who support our programs with their time and their resources and we are mindful of that trust as we work with their children. I am very pleased to report that Del Cerro has exceeded its State Annual Performance Index target for 2010. Our target was a score
of 874 and Del Cerro scored 876. The school is scoring in the upper 10% of all elementary schools across the State and we are very proud of the efforts of our students and staff, who have made this happen. It should also be noted that Del Cerro met it Adequate Yearly Progress expectations, which are established by the “No Child Left Behind” Federal program. Parents are welcome to go to www.cde.ca.gov to get information about Del Cerro and other public schools in the county and state. All performance information begins with STAR testing results from our 2nd through 6th graders, who tested in May of last year. Parents can join the school is celebrating our students’ successes. Del Cerro is a great school and test scores are just one measure of our success, but we don’t want to fail to recognize the achievements of our students.
